Description:
A pair of vintage Japanese wooden boxes carved and painted in the form of mandarin ducks — one slightly larger than the other. Mandarin duck pairs are a longstanding symbol of harmony and faithful partnership in East Asian tradition.

The exterior surfaces are finished in a dark muted tone with hand-painted feather detail throughout; the heads, beaks, and wing panels are painted in warm antique gold. The interiors and bases are finished in a rich copper-russet lacquer. Attributed to Japanese production, likely mid-20th century. A faint maker's seal is visible on one base. No maker has been identified.

Condition:
Good vintage condition with wear consistent with age and use. Male duck has a chip to the bill, an area of paint loss on the left breast with a lighter appearance beneath, and two chips to the tail — one larger, one smaller — less visible when the lid is in place. Female duck has paint loss on the bill and a small tail chip, also less noticeable when closed. Both pieces show light surface scratches and minor finish variation. Lids fit and separate smoothly on both.

Approximate Dimensions:
Male: 7-1/2" long x 3-1/8" wide x 4-1/8" tall
Female: 6-1/2" long x 3" wide x 4" tall
Weight: 1 lb 7 oz (1.44 lbs) combined

Style Tip:
Display them together on a bookshelf, low console, or the corner of a desk where the gold detailing can be appreciated. Sculptural objects that make great hiding places for something special.
