Description:
This charming Chinese export vanity basket is a beautiful and unusual example of early 20th-century novelty wickerwork. Standing approximately 5 inches tall, it features a sophisticated structural design, transitioning from a round base to a hexagonal top, and finishing with an oval opening. The Weave: A classic single-walled, over-under "wicker" weave using a combination of rigid natural reed and decorative bands of twisted seagrass cord (traditionally known as Hong Kong cord). The corners of the hexagon top are accented with black beads as is the cord-wrapped swing handle.
The Fabric Top: A lovely, original silky fabric drawstring throat in a muted palette of green, blue, and olive. The fabric features a subtle Asian-inspired pattern.
Condition:
This antique piece shows honest age with a decided lean — a common characteristic of natural reed structures as they dry over time. The fabric is in excellent condition for its age.
