CONDITION
Good vintage condition. No holes or stains. This piece has clearly been laundered and used many times, giving the fabric an overall soft, timeworn appearance. The embroidery remains intact on the front. On the reverse, many of the thread ends have loosened with use. The back hem is marked “H. H. LANDER” in faded ink.
ABOUT THIS PIECE
This cloth has a wonderfully graphic quality, with repeating square medallions worked primarily in cross-stitch and punctuated by loose navy scrolls and small warm orange centers. The two greens shift from bright leaf green to olive, while the ecru ground and navy keep the overall palette earthy rather than bright.
The faded “H. H. LANDER” marking is an old-fashioned laundry mark, used to identify household linens when they were sent out. A sign that this tablecloth was clearly used and laundered rather than saved away.
INSPIRATION
Use it as a tablecloth on a small square or card table, on a tea or accent table, or turn it diagonally across a larger dining table as a topper. The ecru, navy, green and orange palette works particularly well for autumn decorating, but nothing about the design limits it to one season. Dark wood brings out both the embroidery and the softly aged fabric.
