CONDITION
Excellent vintage condition. No visible wear or signs of use. The fabric, embroidery and crocheted edging are beautifully preserved, with no loose threads.
ABOUT THIS PIECE
The blue cross-stitch embroidery has a distinctive folk-art quality, with highly stylized deer or stags standing alongside trees and geometric, thistle-like motifs. The four napkins form two mirrored pairs, with the embroidery arranged so that one pair folds with the open edge on the left and the other on the right, as shown in the photos.
The off-white fabric appears to be linen, with a substantial, slightly slubby, somewhat sheer weave. The soft winter-white color is particularly lovely against the clear blue embroidery. The coordinating blue crocheted edging is carefully worked around both the topper and all four napkins.
INSPIRATION
The topper is a lovely size for layering over a larger dining table, dressing a small table or creating a setting for afternoon tea. The deer and trees lend themselves naturally to winter and woodland decorating, particularly with brass candlesticks, greenery and dark wood. The classic blue-and-white coloring also makes this a versatile set for year-round cottage or country-house styling.
