CONDITION
Good vintage condition with noticeable wear from previous use. The tray has been polished and presents attractively overall, although there are visible scratches across the plain center and scattered scratches and wear around the wide outer rim. The underside has extensive scratching and several areas of silverplate loss revealing the warmer-colored underlying metal. Some tarnish remains in the recessed decoration and crevices of the ornate border. Please review the detailed condition photographs.
ABOUT THIS PIECE
This round silverplate tray was made by Oneida in its Royal Provincial pattern. It has a wonderfully substantial feel, with a wide, raised border decorated with flowers, leaves, and scrolling ornament and an embossed center design of floral motifs, scrolling foliage, and textured details. The elaborate decoration has a Rococo-inspired character. The underside is stamped with the Oneida U.S.A. mark and an OL crest.
When I found this tray, a paper label bearing the name "Lucia Schubert" was attached to the underside. The label came off during cleaning, but I rather like knowing that someone once took care to identify this tray as theirs.
INSPIRATION
I've used this tray as the base for a centerpiece with seasonal greenery and pillar candles. Its raised rim and generous size also make it useful for gathering glasses, serving accessories, or decorative objects on a buffet or sideboard.
Despite its years of use, the tray still has a lovely presence. The combination of its substantial weight, ornate floral border, and delicate center decoration makes it especially appealing to me.
