ABOUT THIS PIECE
This porcelain sculpture was made by Rosenthal in Germany from a design by Theodor Kärner (1884–1966), a German sculptor known for his animal figures. The underside bears the impressed signature "Th. Kärner," model number 1547, and the Rosenthal Germany backstamp with "handgemalt," meaning hand-painted.
The duck pair design dates to approximately 1930–1934. A documented Rosenthal example of model 1547 has been dated to the 1934–1949 period, although the exact production date of this particular figurine is not known.
The two ducks rest closely together with their heads turn in different directions. The modeling captures the rounded forms, long bills, folded wings, and quiet expressions of the birds. Softly brushed brown and smoky gray tones suggest their feathering, while the pale yellow-green undersides lend warmth to the coloring.
INSPIRATION
A lovely piece for anyone who enjoys ducks, wildlife sculpture, or beautifully modeled porcelain animals. The paired arrangement makes it especially appealing on a bookshelf, mantel, or sideboard, where the different views can be enjoyed.
