A small vintage stoneware crock with a soft gray-blue glazed exterior, broad buff-colored rim, and very dark glazed interior.

CONDITION
Very good vintage condition with no chips or cracks. The glaze and clay surfaces show small spots, irregularities, and other variations from manufacture. The dark interior glaze was applied irregularly and extends onto portions of the buff rim. The unglazed areas retain darker marks consistent with age and use.

ABOUT THIS PIECE
This is a wonderfully straightforward piece of old utilitarian pottery. The softly mottled gray-blue exterior contrasts with the thick buff rim and nearly black interior, while small variations in the glaze and clay give the surface plenty of character. Its thick construction gives this little pot surprising weight and substance.

Small stoneware vessels like this belong to a broad tradition of sturdy everyday kitchen and pantry pottery. This example is unmarked.

INSPIRATION
Its small scale makes this an easy piece to tuck onto a kitchen shelf among old crocks, cutting boards, ironstone, wood, or other primitive kitchen pieces.
