CONDITION
Vintage condition with visible overall crazing to the glaze on both plates. One plate has a shallow rim chip that is clearly visible from the edge and reverse and appears from the front as a slight indentation. The reverse sides show small glaze irregularities and kiln marks from manufacture. General age-related wear consistent with age and use. Best suited for decorative display.
ABOUT THIS PIECE
Wood & Sons’ “Yuan” pattern was designed by Frederick Rhead with inspiration from Chinese decorative traditions. A flying bird and large flowers fill the center of each plate, surrounded by a dense geometric border and smaller floral panels in rich blue and white transfer decoration.
The matching backstamps identify the pattern as “Yuan” by Wood & Sons, England, with registered design number 656368. Frederick Rhead’s Yuan was introduced in 1916 and remained in production, with interruptions, into the 1980s, with a later revival in the early 2000s. These plates clearly show age, but I was unable to determine their specific production date from the marks or other available evidence.
INSPIRATION
A natural choice for a plate wall, china cabinet, or layered display of blue and white transferware. The bird motif and documented Chinese influence also make the pair especially appealing for a chinoiserie collection.
